I mobilized alongside my community: organizing food fridges, setting up vaccine clinics, and rallying support for small businesses on the brink of collapse. That experience confirmed what I already believed: survival and progress are always collective. It's the same principle behind my support for a public People's Center in District 2 and participatory budgeting that puts real power over public spending directly in residents' hands, not developers, not lobbyists, but the people who actually live here.</p>

<p>Trần believes no one should be forced out of the neighborhoods they've spent a lifetime building. She'll fight for stronger tenant protections, preserve and expand affordable housing for working families, seniors, and people with disabilities, and support housing options like ADUs and co-housing that help people stay rooted in their communities. Just as important is protecting the character of District 2 through placekeeping: supporting legacy businesses, community land trusts, and community benefit agreements that ensure growth reflects the people who already live here. As Denver grows, Trần will work to make sure investment strengthens our neighborhoods instead of pricing out the families, cultures, and history that make them home.</p>

As a small business owner for more than 20 years, she understands the challenges entrepreneurs face and will fight for better access to city resources, affordable capital, technical assistance, equitable contracting, and a simpler permitting process, especially for immigrant, women, and minority-owned businesses. Ordinary people, who didn't know my parents but welcomed them anyway, gave them food, clothing, job training, and dignity. That generosity changed the course of our family's story. It's also where I learned the lesson that has shaped everything I believe since: when public systems and communities show up for people, lives are transformed. Not charity. Not luck. Investment, and solidarity.</p><p>My parents met in Minnesota at 17 and 19, teenagers carrying unimaginable trauma. With the help of community, my dad trained as a machinery repairman and my mom became a seamstress. My dad later found work in Denver at Bar-S Foods, and through the resettlement network, my parents secured public housing in Sun Valley Homes, where I was born. Public housing didn't just give my family shelter. It gave us a foundation to build from. They worked long hours, stretched every dollar, and moved our family into the apartments above the old Federal Theater. Years later, through grit and sacrifice, they did what once seemed impossible: they bought their own home. Watching my parents work themselves to exhaustion is why I know in my bones that working families deserve more support than this city has ever given them. Public investment isn't a handout. It's the difference between a family surviving and a family building a future. Housing, healthcare, and childcare shouldn't be things people have to fight for on their own. They should be guaranteed.</p>

Trần believes District 2 deserves the same dignity, and yes, the same nice things, as every other neighborhood. That's what fighting for us looks like.</p>

<p>My story begins long before I was born — shaped by the courage and sacrifice of my parents, who fled their home because of war.</p><p>My parents were what many called “boat people.” They were among nearly two million who fled Vietnam by sea after the fall of Saigon. That journey was harrowing. Refugees faced overcrowded boats, starvation, violent storms, and piracy. Historians estimate that between 200,000 and 400,000 people died at sea. My parents were some of the fortunate ones who survived.</p><p>They first arrived in the United States at a temporary tent city set up to process the wave of refugees. From there, they were sponsored by a family in Minnesota through the federal resettlement program. Ordinary Americans — people who didn’t know them but welcomed them anyway — gave my parents food, clothing, job training, and most importantly, dignity. That generosity changed the course of our family’s story.</p><p>It was in Minnesota that my parents met. They were just 17 and 19 — teenagers carrying unimaginable trauma, in a country where they didn’t know the language or culture. Yet, with the help of community, my dad trained as a machinery repairman and my mom became a seamstress. Their sponsors even helped pay for their wedding, setting them on a path neither could have imagined when they climbed onto those boats.</p><p>Not long after, my dad found work in Denver at Bar-S Foods. Through connections made in the resettlement program, my parents secured public housing in <a href="https://www.historycolorado.org/westside-memory-project-bottoms-sun-valley-neighborhood" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sun Valley Homes</a>, where I was born. From there, they worked long hours, saved what little they could, and eventually moving our family to the Northside into the apartments above the old Federal Theater, when it was still a dollar movie theater. Years later — through grit, persistence, and sacrifice — they did what once seemed impossible: they bought their own home, just 15 minutes north of Denver.</p><p>That’s the foundation I come from — a family who risked everything for freedom, and a community that caught us when we fell.</p><p>My childhood was shaped by responsibility. Because my parents were still learning English and navigating this new country, I often served as their interpreter — at doctors’ offices, schools, and government agencies — all while struggling to learn English myself.</p><p>At school, I longed to be like my friends — the “all-American kid” who went to the mall, had sleepovers, and stayed out late. But at home, I was Vietnamese — the eldest daughter, the cultural bridge, the one who helped my parents navigate a country that didn’t always welcome them. I lived in the in-between, belonging fully to neither world: not entirely Asian, yet not fully American.</p><p>By 15, the weight of those responsibilities caught up with me. I found myself on my own — couch-hopping and relying on the kindness of friends, their parents, and school counselors. Once again, community stepped in to catch me when I was falling.</p><p>It was around that time I met Josh. We were just kids — 15 and 17 — when we became teen parents. Josh and his family took me in as one of their own, and together we built a new life. It wasn’t easy. But love and community changed the trajectory of my story.</p><p>Today, as an adult, I walk alongside my parents on our shared journey of healing. Together, we are learning to carry our traumas with grace, to turn pain into strength, and to transform struggle into connection. Our healing isn’t perfect, but it is powerful — a reminder that love, resilience, and community can rebuild what once felt broken.</p><p>When I share this story, I don’t share it for sympathy. I share it to show the transformative power of community and advocacy.</p><p><strong>Community gave my parents a chance at survival.<br>Community lifted me through my hardest years.<br>Community helped us raise our family, grow our small businesses, and nurture others along the way.</strong></p><p>And community is the reason I have the courage to stand before you today.</p><p>But my courage doesn’t come from community alone. It also comes from my parents. Watching them leave everything behind, risk their lives at sea, and rebuild from nothing gave me a blueprint for bravery. Their sacrifices taught me that even when the odds are against you, even when the seas are rough, hope is worth fighting for.</p><p>Their bravery is my inheritance. Their strength is my foundation. And because of them — and because of community — I have the courage to stand here now: ready to lead, ready to serve, and ready to advocate for a stronger, more inclusive Denver.</p><p>Over the last 25+ years, I’ve worn many hats: mother, wife, sister, friend, small business owner, creative, daughter of Vietnamese refugees — and now, community advocate and public servant. Each of these roles has shaped who I am:</p><p><strong>As a daughter of refugees</strong>, I learned that opportunities aren’t handed to us — they are built with grit, resilience, hope, and community.</p><p><strong>As a mother</strong>, I think about the city my children will inherit and the community they will grow into.</p><p><strong>As a wife</strong>, I dream with Josh about a future where families like ours can stay rooted, thrive, and grow old together.</p><p><strong>As a business owner</strong>, I learned the importance of investing in people and creating spaces where everyone belongs.</p><p><strong>As a creative</strong>, I learned to imagine what doesn’t exist yet — and to see possibilities where others see barriers.</p><p><strong>As a reproductive rights advocate,</strong> I know that belonging also means the freedom to make decisions about our own bodies, and access to care that supports healthy families and thriving communities.</p><p><strong>As a community advocate and public servant</strong>, I’ve built programs and strategies that ensure historically excluded voices are heard, uplifted, and centered in decision-making. I’ve seen where our systems work and where they fall short. Together, we organized food fridges to feed hungry families, set up vaccine clinics for essential workers, and rallied support for immigrant-, refugee-, and minority-owned businesses on the brink of collapse. These weren’t acts of charity — they were acts of solidarity, advocacy, and connection, reminding us that survival and progress are always collective.</p><p>Today, I serve as Deputy Director of Community Outreach for the City of Denver, bringing nearly three years of hands-on experience inside City Hall. In this role, I build multilingual, culturally responsive engagement strategies to ensure historically excluded voices are heard, respected, and reflected in city decision-making. Because I understand how city government works from the inside, I am uniquely prepared to lead City Council District 2—navigating systems effectively, advocating strategically, and turning community priorities into action.</p><p>I also serve on the Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Board and the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, where I advocate for reproductive justice, cultural equity, and inclusive public policy. Together, my experience, values, and commitment to public service equip me to help our neighborhoods grow stronger and thrive.</p><p>If elected, I would become the first Asian American and first-generation Vietnamese American to hold a seat on Denver City Council. But representation alone is not enough.</p><p>My vision is bigger: to remake the very table of power. She'll also work to ensure city services are accessible through multilingual resources, plain-language communication, and in-person support for residents who need it. <p>As councilmember, Trần will fight to bring the investment and public resources District 2 deserves. Her flagship proposal is the Far Southwest Denver People's Center, a free neighborhood hub where residents can access housing assistance, healthcare, food programs, benefits navigation, and language-accessible services all in one place. She'll also expand opportunities for young people through after-school programs and workforce training, support older adults with aging-in-place resources and property tax relief, and help small businesses grow with grants and low-interest capital. Just as importantly, Trần believes the people who live here should have a real voice in how public dollars are spent. She'll fight for participatory budgeting so neighbors, not developers or lobbyists behind closed doors, help decide which projects and services receive funding, ensuring investment reflects the needs of the community.</p>

<p>Join me for an evening of good food and conversation in District 2.</p><p>On Saturday, July 25th, from 5–7 PM, Jade Cafe — a local, immigrant-owned small business in our district since 1988 — will be hosting me for a casual Dine-In &amp; Chat with owner Phu Nguyen, who'll share his journey building his family business in our community.</p>

It's about recognizing that fairness starts with meeting people where they are."</h5><p>Far Southwest Denver has been left behind for decades. Crumbling streets, underfunded schools, neglected parks, while wealth and investment kept flowing to wealthier parts of the city. Trần doesn't see this as bad luck. She sees it as the result of a system that lets developers and corporate interests set the agenda instead of working people. As a council member, she'll use her seat to push power and public dollars back toward the community. This isn't charity. It's justice.</p><p>Her flagship proposal is the <span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Far Southwest Denver People's Center</strong></span>, a free public hub where residents can get housing help, benefits navigation, and language-accessible support all in one place. Healthcare and food shouldn't be things people have to buy their way into. The center will connect residents to primary care, mental health services, SNAP and WIC enrollment, and food distribution as public goods, not privileges. Seniors will have access to aging-in-place support and property tax relief. Youth will have free after-school programs, nutrition support, and workforce training. Small businesses, especially family-owned and worker-owned ones, will get grants and low-interest capital so they can compete with absentee investors instead of getting pushed out by them.</p><p>Trần will also fight to bring participatory budgeting to Denver, so residents decide how public money gets spent instead of developers and lobbyists deciding behind closed doors. Over the long term, she wants to expand public transit, invest in community centers, and put real protections in place against displacement, so the people who built this neighborhood aren't the ones pushed out of it.</p><p>For Trần, equity isn't a talking point. It's the reason she's running. As council member, she'll use every tool available to bring resources and real power back to working-class Far Southwest Denver, delivering what this community has been denied for generations.</p>
